Tragedy struck as a bus en route from Harare to Cape Town collided with a haulage truck, resulting in the loss of at least 13 lives. The incident, which left 26 individuals with severe injuries, unfolded on Saturday evening, approximately a hundred kilometers from Cape Town.
The bus, operated by Simplex Bus Company, was navigating the N1 Highway near Hex River Pass in the Western Cape when the collision transpired. Concerns mount over the possibility of the death toll climbing higher, considering the gravity of injuries sustained by some of the 26 passengers.
According to South African media, the crash occurred roughly 130 kilometers before reaching Cape Town. Tragically, the driver perished at the scene as he purportedly attempted to exit the bus during the collision.
According to SA Trucker, an online news organization, “Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, where survivors were rushed to Worcester Hospital for urgent medical attention. The extent of their injuries varied, with some in critical condition, fighting for their lives. The cause of the accident is not known at the moment, however, authorities have since launched investigations into the tragic crash.”
Esther Mudambo, Zimbabwe’s consul general in Cape Town, assured that further information regarding the accident will be provided in due time.
The injured individuals have been transported to Noodsentrum Hospital in the Western Cape for medical treatment.
