Zimbabwe State Broadcaster Suspends CEO Amid Allegations

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the state broadcaster, has taken action against its embattled Chief Executive Officer, Adelaide Chikunguru, by suspending her.

Chikunguru is under scrutiny for allegations involving financial mismanagement and poor corporate governance. There are also concerns about her reported irregular employment by then Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa within the state-owned broadcaster.

In an announcement made this Wednesday, the ZBC board disclosed the anticipated decision following escalating tensions between Chikunguru and the newly-appointed board chairperson, Halliet Rushwaya, who is reportedly related to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

“The Board of Directors of the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has suspended the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer, Ms Adelaide Chikunguru, with immediate effect.

“The reasons for Ms. Chikunguru’s suspension have been confidentially made known to her but are not, however, being made public for the time being,” reads the statement.

In the interim, Assael Machakata, the corporation’s finance director, has been designated as the acting CEO during Chikunguru’s suspension period.
