Namibian President Hage Geingob Laid to Rest

Namibian President Hage Geingob was interred at the country’s Heroes’ Acre cemetery on Sunday, in a state funeral graced by African leaders, the President of Germany, and Princess Anne, the sister of Britain’s King Charles III.

Geingob passed away earlier this month at the age of 82 while undergoing cancer treatment. He served as Namibia’s third president since its independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. Prior to independence, Namibia was a German colony.

Monica Geingos, the widow of Geingob, delivered a heartfelt message during a memorial service on Saturday, honoring her husband’s journey from humble rural beginnings to becoming a revered national leader and a prominent figure across the African continent.
“You were born a peasant and died a president,” Geingos said at the memorial service at a soccer stadium that was filled with mourners.

During the funeral procession on Sunday, Geingob’s casket, adorned with the Namibian flag, was transported in a glass case atop a military trailer.

The funeral was attended by representatives from 27 countries, including Princess Anne, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier of Germany, President Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, and 18 heads of state. Notable attendees included leaders from South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Zambia, and Zimbabwe, as reported by AfricaNews.
