Moreblessing Ali, the deceased activist associated with the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), whose life was tragically ended by a supporter of the Zanu PF party, is finally slated for burial, marking two years since her brutal murder.
Ali’s disappearance was first reported on May 24, 2022, until her dismembered remains were discovered discarded in a disused well owned by Pius Jamba, the perpetrator’s mother.
The Ali family, in announcing the forthcoming burial, disclosed that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) had granted them access to view her body, a privilege they had been previously denied since 2022.
As a show of solidarity, the family had resolved that Moreblessing’s interment would only take place once their lawyer, Job Sikhala, was released from incarceration. Sikhala had been arrested while fulfilling his legal duties on their behalf.
Sikhala regained his freedom last month after enduring 595 days of pretrial detention at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. He faced charges of inciting violence stemming from remarks he allegedly made following Moreblessing’s tragic death.
“We deeply appreciate the unwavering support and solidarity from all of you during these challenging nearly two years, which lacked proper mourning and burial for our beloved family member
“The family has been in communication with the police, and we have had the opportunity to view Moreblessing’s dismembered body. Plans are underway to provide Moreblessing with a dignified burial. Once the dates for the burial are confirmed, you will receive notification.”
In December of last year, Jamba received a 30-year prison sentence from High Court judge Justice Esther Muremba. In delivering the verdict, Justice Muremba emphasized the gravity of his actions, stating that his merciless killing of a vulnerable woman warranted a substantial period of incarceration.
