YouTube recently removed Jah Signal’s “Sweetie” video due to a copyright infringement complaint filed by gospel artist Charles Charamba.
The video, which played a significant role in Jah Signal’s rise to fame in 2018, had accumulated over six million views on YouTube. In the song, Jah Signal incorporated elements from Charamba’s “Kana Vanhu Vangu.”
Reportedly, Jah Signal did not obtain permission from Charamba before using his work, despite attempting to seek consent. Charamba, expressing his disapproval in a 2018 interview, described the song as blasphemous, citing conflicts with his personal beliefs.
Charamba stated that he had advised against the use of his lyrics when approached for consent, cautioning against potential consequences. He viewed the adaptation not merely as a parody but as blasphemous.
This incident isn’t isolated, as other artists have also faced copyright claims for sampling Charamba’s work. It suggests a potential trend of further claims in the future.
