Despite the introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency by the government, prices of basic goods continue to climb, causing the annual inflation rate for April 2024 to reach 57.5%, up from 55.34% in March 2024.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), the year-on-year inflation rate for April 2024, measured by the all-items Consumer Price Index (CPI), stood at 57.5%. This indicates an average price increase of 57.5% between April 2023 and April 2024.
The month-on-month inflation rate for April 2024 was 2.9%, a decrease from the March 2024 rate of 4.9%, showing an average price increase of 2.9% between March and April 2024.
ZIMSTAT also reported that the month-on-month Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages inflation rate for April 2024 was 4.2%, down from 8.1% in March 2024. The non-food inflation rate for April 2024 was 2.4%, a decrease from 3% in March 2024.
In April 2024, the Food Poverty Line (FPL) for one person was ZiG 424.95, while the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for one person was ZiG 650.26.
For April 2024, the month-on-month USD inflation rate was 0.8%, up from 0.2% in March 2024. The year-on-year USD inflation rate for April 2024 stood at 3.2%.
ZIMSTAT highlighted that for April 2024, the CPI for Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels had the highest contribution to the month-on-month change in index (inflation rate) at 0.4%.
