Last month, more than 10 suspected illegal foreign currency dealers apprehended in Harare have been refused bail over concerns of potential flight during trial. The presiding magistrate asserted that the accused have a prima facie case against them.
The Harare Magistrates Court emphasized that these suspects are regarded as economic saboteurs, impeding the government and Central Bank’s efforts to stabilize the economy.
These individuals are part of a larger group of 65 illegal forex dealers arrested during a crackdown by the RBZ’s Financial Intelligence Unit. The remaining suspects are still in custody awaiting their bail determinations.
They face charges of violating the Exchange Control Act.
