A mushikashika team, comprising a driver and conductor, has been apprehended on suspicion of kidnapping and assaulting two traffic police officers in Waterfalls, Harare.
The individuals in question, identified as Kudakwashe Chigeregomo (23) and Emmanuel Denhere (18), residents of Kuwadzana, allegedly perpetrated the act against Constables Godknows Maretawona (36) and Isaac Manjokoto (33), both stationed at the Mbare Traffic Police Station.
The incident unfolded when the officers, deployed to manage traffic flow at a busy intersection in Waterfalls, intervened and arrested the two suspects operating an unlicensed grey Nissan AD van (registration AGE 6658) used for unauthorized passenger transport.
Instead of complying with the officers’ instructions to proceed to the Mbare Traffic Police Post at Masteps in Hopley, the driver, Kudakwashe, veered eastward along Forbes Road, resulting in a collision with a house’s precast wall, forcing the vehicle to stop.
Subsequently, both Kudakwashe and Emmanuel allegedly assaulted the officers, inflicting head and facial injuries with unspecified objects. The assault was captured on video and circulated widely on social media platforms.
Following a call for backup, the officers managed to subdue the suspects and sustained injuries in the process. They were promptly transported to Sally Mugabe Hospital for medical attention.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the two suspects and stated that investigations into the incident are underway.
