A Hwange magistrate has sentenced a local teacher to one year in jail for taking public exams in November on behalf of three students. Mkululi Moyo, 48, will serve eight months, with four months suspended for good behavior.

During the trial, it emerged that Moyo collaborated with an invigilator, Mark Bhebhe, who is currently at large, to carry out the act.

According to the prosecution, Moyo impersonated Hwange high school students during the November 2023 Maths paper 2 exam. Bhebhe provided the written answer scripts to the students, who only filled in their personal details. In return, Bhebhe received a reward of US$150.

“The matter came to light in December when Zimsec examiners detected that the handwriting on the personal details section was different from the handwriting in the main body of the answer script,” said the National Prosecuting Authority.

The students were identified as Hwange High School attendees.

After an investigation, Moyo’s handwriting was confirmed by the headmaster of Hwange High School, leading to his arrest on March 22, 2024.
