Today, on Monday, April 8, Lovejoy Nyamande, a resident of Masona village in Seke communal lands, faces sentencing after being found guilty of multiple counts of fraud at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Nyamande, whose age was not disclosed, was convicted last week on five counts of fraud. The prosecution demonstrated that on March 13 and 14 of this year, Nyamande used a counterfeit national identity card to withdraw US$1,000 from a CBZ branch on two separate occasions, utilizing the account of the first victim.
Additionally, in March, Nyamande employed the same deceptive method three more times, withdrawing US$1,000 each time from a different CBZ account belonging to another unsuspecting customer.
The fraudulent transactions came to light on March 27 when the second victim received a notification of a withdrawal he hadn’t made, prompting him to report the suspicious activity to the bank on April 2, accompanied by his assistant.
During their visit to the bank, the second victim and his assistant were shown closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to identify the perpetrator. Coincidentally, while inside the bank, the assistant encountered Nyamande entering the premises. Authorities promptly arrested Nyamande, who was found in possession of forged identification documents and bank withdrawal slips containing the details of both victims.
