Polite Ncube of Gokwe has found himself in legal trouble following the discovery of two Cobra species in his possession, which he purportedly utilizes for healing practices.

Last week, Ncube was apprehended and brought before the Kwekwe Magistrates Court, charged with violating the Parks and Wildlife Act, specifically regarding the transportation of animals from one location to another.

In an official statement from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), it was disclosed that Ncube was intercepted by law enforcement officers on patrol in Kwekwe’s central business district around 3 am on March 25, 2024. He was found carrying a satchel containing the two reptiles, leading to his arrest and subsequent court appearance.

According to the NPA statement, “The accused person told the court that the snakes were given to him by his grandfather as short roots that grew (morphed) to become the snakes in question which he uses to heal people.”

Ncube’s assertion reportedly astonished those present in the courtroom. Despite the reptiles being confiscated by the authorities, Ncube expressed confidence in being reunited with them upon his return to Gokwe.

Despite his conviction, Ncube was sentenced to pay a US$200 fine, with an alternative of four months’ imprisonment in case of non-payment.
