High Court Grants Bail to Madzibaba Ishmael and Sect Members

Ishmael Chokurongerwa, commonly known as Madzibaba Ishmael and leader of the Johanne Masowe Penyera Nyika sect, has been released on bail by the High Court following nearly two months in remand prison.

Chokurongerwa (54) and seven other members of the sect were arrested on charges related to alleged violations of the Burial and Children’s Act.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) stated that the High Court’s decision to grant bail was based on the assessment that there was no longer a risk of interference with witnesses by Madzibaba Ishmael.

As part of the bail conditions, Chokurongerwa is required to deposit US$ 1,000 with the clerk of court at the Norton Magistrates’ Court. Additionally, he is prohibited from conducting any church gatherings until the conclusion of the case, and he must not interfere with witnesses either directly or indirectly. He is also obligated to report to the police three times a week.

Earlier this month, Chokurongerwa’s co-accused—Shingirai Ngawafune (42), Takavengwa Gwenzi (55), Zebedia Sigudu (49), Devlodge Katsande (47), Wonder Kabaya (41), and Siribinio Chikurunhe (53)—were granted bail by the Harare High Court.

The trial for all eight individuals is scheduled to commence on May 7, 2024, at the Norton Magistrates’ Court.

According to the State, Chokurongerwa and his associates conducted funeral services without proper burial orders for the deceased, Hazel Chikunhire and Winlet Kabaya. Additionally, they are accused of neglecting and exposing children under their care to conditions likely to cause unnecessary suffering.
