The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) recently announced the promotion of Welshman Ncube, based in Bulawayo, to the position of party president from his previous role as deputy.
Amid reports of yet another faction within the CCC appointing Jameson Timba as its leader, Ncube’s elevation on Saturday underscores the ongoing turmoil within the CCC following the resignation of former President Nelson Chamisa.
Chamisa stepped down from his leadership position earlier this month, citing the perceived interference of Zanu PF in the CCC’s affairs, along with a diminishing authority recognized by both the courts and governmental ministries.
Ncube’s appointment to the presidency signals a shift in leadership dynamics within the opposition party. This position is set to undergo a rotational system among the party’s three vice presidents, namely Tendai Biti and Lynette Karenyi-Kore, each serving a 90-day term in rotation.
“Having met and deliberated on various matters affecting the party, and having noted the resignation of Chamisa as President of the party, the Citizens Coalition for Change National Standing Committee (NSC) resolved to fill in the vacancy left by Chamisa by appointing an Acting President,” reads a released by Jacob Mafume.
Mafume currently holds the role of Acting Communications Secretary within the party, a position reinstated based on a resolution made by the NSC to return to the organizational framework established in 2019.
“The Acting President position will be held by the three Vice Presidents, on a 90-day rotation basis, until the party goes to an elective congress.
“By record of the May 2019 Gweru Congress, and within the context of the leadership of the party as of 22 January 2022, Ncube is the most senior of the Vice Presidents. As a consequence thereof, the NSC resolved to, with immediate effect, appoint Ncube as the Acting President.
“The appointment of the Acting President and the resumption of duties by all office bearers based on 2019 structures marks the beginning of an uninterrupted path to restore stability and democracy within the party.”
