After the secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) approved a project led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration, it seems that calls for new elections in Zimbabwe have been put on hold.
The African Union met with ambassador Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, Mnangagwa’s special envoy, and decided to support the multi-million dollar Museum of African Liberation in Harare. The Institute of African Knowledge is carrying out this initiative primarily with the support of Mnangagwa’s administration (INSTAK).
SADC and the AU indicated last week that they would collaborate with Mnangagwa’s administration on the project. Opponents have denounced this as “sanitizing Mnangagwa’s illegal regime.”
The SADC Election Observer Mission, which identified multiple anomalies in the election and — along with other international observer missions — fell short of labeling the poll outcome illegitimate.
