Justice Priscilla Chigumba has been granted a renewed term as the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) in a letter from Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Martin Rushwaya. The re-appointment, as conveyed by Rushwaya, is in accordance with section 238(5) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (No.20) Act 2013. The six-year contract is scheduled to commence on February 1, 2024.
Expressing the announcement, chief secretary to the President and cabinet Martin Rushwaya stated, “I am pleased to advise that His Excellency the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Comrade Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has, in terms of section 238(5) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe (No.20) Act 2013 re-appointed you as the chairperson of the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for six years with effect from 1 February 2024,”
Chigumba, who initially assumed the role in 2018, has overseen two harmonized elections during her tenure. With this renewed contract, she will lead the commission through the electoral cycle of 2028.
