Mercedes’ Technical Director, James Allison, has signed a long-term contract extension, following closely on the heels of Toto Wolff’s recent three-year deal with the team.

Allison initially joined Mercedes as Technical Director in 2017, contributing to the team’s impressive track record of securing four drivers’ titles and five constructors’ championships during his tenure. After taking on the role of Chief Technical Officer in 2021, he focused on long-term strategies for the F1 project and engaged in external projects, such as the INEOS Britannia America’s Cup team.

In April of the previous year, Allison returned to a more prominent role as Technical Director, exchanging positions with Mike Elliott. The exact duration of his new contract remains undisclosed by the team, as this commitment comes ahead of a significant rule change for the 2026 season.

Expressing his gratitude, Allison stated, “F1 has brought me a lot of good fortune, but none greater than answering Toto’s call to join Mercedes in 2017. It is a great privilege to continue this adventure, working alongside brilliant colleagues and fighting together for championship success.”

Toto Wolff praised Allison’s contributions, stating, “I am thrilled that James has committed his long-term future to the team. Put simply, he is the most impressive technical leader in our sport.” Wolff emphasized Allison’s gladiator spirit, knowledge, experience, determination, and his impact on the team’s culture.

Allison, with an illustrious career dating back to the early 1990s, has garnered extensive F1 experience, achieving drivers’ and constructors’ championships at Renault and Ferrari in addition to his championship-winning tenure at Mercedes.

Despite facing challenges in recent seasons, marked by just one victory, Mercedes is adopting a different technical direction this winter, hoping to regain their winning form. The team is set to unveil their 2024 machine on February 14.
